What does a WMS control for construction materials?

Construction supply delivers to sites against project schedules, in mixed units, often from yard and indoor storage at once. A warehouse management system holds stock per project and location, converts between trading units, and consolidates a delivery so a site receives a complete load rather than partial drops.

  • Stock allocated and reported per project as well as per item
  • Unit conversion between length, pack, pallet and bulk
  • Yard and indoor locations managed as one stock position
  • Site deliveries consolidated against the call-off schedule

Materials, projects and certificates under control

Construction supply is project work wearing a distribution costume. Materials are ordered against a project, delivered to a site on a date that keeps moving, and every batch has to arrive with its certificate. BizBloqs connects project demand to warehouse reality, so the crew on site is never waiting for material that is sitting on a yard twenty kilometres away.

New to this topic? Start with the complete warehouse management system (WMS) guide — what a WMS does, what it costs and how a rollout works.

Stock allocated to the project, not just the warehouse

Materials are reserved against a project and a phase from the moment they are ordered. Availability is judged against real project demand rather than a single warehouse total, so one site cannot quietly consume another site's steel.

Call-off deliveries are planned against the site schedule. When the schedule moves — and it does — the reservation moves with it instead of being reworked by hand.

Project managers see committed, in-transit and delivered quantities in one place, which is usually the first time the office and the site agree on the same number.

Certificates, batches and bulky goods handling

Mill certificates, CE declarations and test reports are held against the batch and travel with the delivery, so the paperwork arrives with the pallet rather than a week later by email.

Long, heavy and awkward goods are handled with dimension-aware locations and load planning, including reverse drop sequencing so the first delivery of the day is the last item loaded.

Returns of surplus material from site are booked back against the project with their condition recorded, so project cost reflects what was actually consumed.

What Construction operators run into

The problem

Material is delivered to site and then cannot be accounted for

WMS

Project Stock Allocation

Stock reserved and issued against a project and a site, so material consumption is visible per job rather than in aggregate

Tools and equipment are issued and never formally returned

WMS

Issue and Return Control

Equipment issued against a person and a project with an expected return, and overdue items reported automatically

Call-off orders against a framework are tracked manually

OMS

Call-Off Order Management

Framework agreements held as remaining entitlement, with each call-off drawn down and visible to both sides

Certificates and declarations of performance are chased per delivery

Integration

Document Pack per Delivery

Product certificates linked to batch and issued automatically with the delivery documentation the site needs

Returns of surplus material are absorbed as loss

Finance

Surplus Return Handling

Site returns booked back against the project with a condition grade, so surplus becomes recoverable value rather than shrinkage

Five star rating

In addition to a scan procedure with EDI integration, BizBloqs has set up an entire production system for us. Production planning can provide direct instructions and as soon as they are ready, it all arrives in the OMS. This gives us a larger production capacity and a drastic reduction of the picking mistakes in dispatching.
