What does a WMS control in technical wholesale?

Technical wholesale carries very large catalogues where many items look alike and substitution is common. A warehouse management system confirms the exact article at pick, holds supersession and alternative relationships on the item, and keeps fast and slow movers in storage and pick strategies that suit their turnover.

  • Exact article confirmed by scan, so near-identical parts cannot be swapped
  • Supersession and alternative articles proposed at pick
  • Fast and slow movers stored under different strategies
  • Customer-specific pricing and packing handled outside the pick process

Thousands of parts, picked right the first time

Technical wholesale lives on breadth. Tens of thousands of fasteners, bearings, seals, fittings and tools, most of them nearly identical to the one in the next bin, sold across a webshop, a trade counter and a field sales team at the same time. The margin is thin and the errors are expensive, because a wrong part does not just come back — it stops a customer's machine. BizBloqs makes the part number, the bin and the batch the thing that drives the work, so accuracy stops depending on who is on shift.

Small-parts accuracy without slowing the pick down

Every bin and every part is scanned on the pick, so a variant that differs by five millimetres or one coating grade cannot be substituted by eye. The check happens inside the pick rather than as a separate inspection step, which is why accuracy rises without the pick rate falling.

Bin locations are reslotted on real pick frequency, so the parts that move every day sit within a few steps of the packing bench and the long tail sits further out. Multi-order batch picking then turns one walk into many orders instead of one.

Counting is done as cycle counts on the bins that matter most, driven by movement and value, so the annual stocktake stops being a shutdown and stock accuracy is maintained continuously.

Counter, webshop and contract customers on one stock picture

Over-the-counter issues are booked against stock the moment they happen, so the webshop, the ERP and the physical shelf are never telling three different stories about the same part.

Customer-specific kits are held as a bill of materials with guided assembly, so a kit is built complete and its components are depleted correctly rather than disappearing from stock unrecorded.

Material and test certificates are linked to the batch and issued with the delivery documents, and open purchase orders are visible alongside allocated stock, so the delivery date quoted to a contract customer is one the operation can actually keep.

What Technical Wholesale operators run into

The problem

Thousands of near-identical parts are picked by eye and the wrong variant ships

WMS

Scan-Verified Small-Parts Picking

Every bin and part scanned on the pick, so an M8 x 25 can never leave the building as an M8 x 30

Fast movers are scattered across the racking and pickers walk the whole warehouse

WMS

Velocity-Based Bin Slotting

Bin locations reslotted on real pick frequency, with multi-order batch picking so one walk serves many orders

Trade counter sales are written down and only reach the system hours later

OMS

Counter Sales in Real Time

Over-the-counter issues booked against stock as they happen, so web, ERP and the shelf agree at all times

Customer-specific kits are assembled by hand and components are missed

WMS

Kitting and Assembly Control

Kits held as a bill of materials with guided assembly and component-level stock, so a kit is never shipped short

Test certificates and declarations are chased by email after the goods have gone

Integration

Certificates with the Goods

Material and test certificates linked to the batch and issued automatically with the delivery documents

Next-day promises are made without knowing what supplier replenishment will land

OMS

Backorder and Replenishment Visibility

Open purchase orders, incoming quantities and allocated stock in one view, so the delivery date quoted is the date that holds

In addition to a scan procedure with EDI integration, BizBloqs has set up an entire production system for us. Production planning can provide direct instructions and as soon as they are ready, it all arrives in the OMS. This gives us a larger production capacity and a drastic reduction of the picking mistakes in dispatching.
