What does a WMS control for paper and packaging?

Paper and packaging is handled in rolls, reams, pallets and bulk, often with the same item traded in several units. A warehouse management system converts between those units on the stock record, tracks batch for colour and quality consistency, and manages returnable carriers alongside the goods themselves.

  • One item stocked and picked in multiple trading units
  • Batch retained so a customer receives consistent quality
  • Roll and pallet dimensions driving storage class and handling
  • Returnable pallets and carriers tracked as their own stock

Every reel accounted for, every remnant reused

Paper and packaging is a business of large, valuable, awkward units that behave nothing like a standard pallet. A reel has a width, a grammage, a diameter and a mill batch, it gets part-used and put back, and it is easy to damage in the clamp. BizBloqs tracks stock at the level the product actually exists, so consumption, remnants and waste are visible during the run instead of at month end.

New to this topic? Start with the complete warehouse management system (WMS) guide — what a WMS does, what it costs and how a rollout works.

Reel-level stock instead of pallet-level guesswork

Each reel is identified individually with its grammage, width, diameter and mill batch, so the operator selecting stock for a job is choosing a specific reel and not a generic article code.

Part-used reels are booked back with their remaining length or weight and offered first on the next matching job, which is usually where the fastest margin gain in the whole operation is hiding.

Damage is recorded against the individual reel at the moment it is found, with downgrade or scrap routed through a controlled decision rather than a quiet write-off.

Converting, customer stock and bulky dispatch

Reels are scanned onto the machine and consumption is booked as it happens, so work in progress, yield and waste are visible during the run and not reconstructed afterwards.

Printed and converted stock is reserved to the customer that owns it, with call-off against agreed volumes, so a job produced for one account cannot be shipped against another.

Load building is dimension and weight aware with drop sequencing, so trailer fill is planned in the office rather than improvised on the dock.

What Paper & Packaging operators run into

The problem

Reels are identified by a handwritten label and lose their production data

WMS

Reel-Level Identification

Every reel carries its own barcode with grammage, width, diameter and mill batch, tracked individually from receipt to converting

Part-used reels disappear from stock and get replaced by a full one

WMS

Remnant Stock Control

Remaining length or weight booked back as usable stock and offered first on the next matching job, so remnants are consumed instead of scrapped

Converting consumption is reported after the fact and never matches the plan

WMS

Consumption at the Machine

Reels scanned onto the machine and consumption booked as it happens, so work in progress and waste are visible during the run

Customer-specific print jobs are stored as generic stock and get shipped to the wrong account

OMS

Customer-Owned Stock

Printed and converted stock reserved to the account that owns it, with call-off against agreed volumes rather than a shared pool

Clamp handling damages reels and the loss is only found at dispatch

WMS

Handling and Damage Logging

Damage recorded against the individual reel at the moment it is found, with downgrade or scrap routed through a controlled decision

Bulky pallets and reels are loaded without a plan and trailers go out half empty

TMS

Load Planning for Bulky Goods

Dimension and weight aware load building with drop sequencing, so trailer fill is planned rather than discovered on the dock

In addition to a scan procedure with EDI integration, BizBloqs has set up an entire production system for us. Production planning can provide direct instructions and as soon as they are ready, it all arrives in the OMS. This gives us a larger production capacity and a drastic reduction of the picking mistakes in dispatching.
