What does a WMS enforce in a chemical warehouse?

Chemical storage is constrained by hazard class, segregation rules and documentation. A warehouse management system checks hazard compatibility before assigning a location, keeps batch and safety-document references on the stock record, and blocks a shipment whose transport documentation is incomplete.

  • Hazard class checked before a putaway location is assigned
  • Incompatible goods prevented from sharing a storage zone
  • Batch and safety document references held on the stock position
  • Transport documentation validated before the shipment is released

Hazardous stock, handled by the rules

Chemical distribution is a compliance problem disguised as a warehouse problem. Hazard classes decide where a pallet may stand, batch and concentration decide what may be shipped, and the safety data sheet has to travel with the goods every single time. BizBloqs puts those rules in the process itself, so the floor cannot break them and the paperwork is produced by the work rather than after it.

New to this topic? Start with the complete warehouse management system (WMS) guide — what a WMS does, what it costs and how a rollout works.

Segregation and hazard control enforced on the floor

Hazard class, packing group and storage requirements are held on the item and matched against the location before a putaway is confirmed. Incompatible substances cannot end up in the same zone because the system will not offer the location.

Bunded areas, ventilated stores and temperature-controlled zones are modelled as real locations with their own capacity and rules, so the stock picture on screen matches the physical reality of the site.

Every movement is recorded against user, location and timestamp, which turns an inspection or an insurance review into a report rather than a reconstruction.

Batch, documentation and dangerous goods dispatch

Batch numbers, concentrations and expiry dates are captured at goods receipt and carried through every movement, with FEFO enforced on the pick so short-dated material leaves first.

The current safety data sheet is linked to the batch and issued automatically with the delivery documents, removing the email chase that causes most customer complaints.

ADR and limited-quantity thresholds are evaluated when the order is entered, so the transport requirement is known before the load is built instead of when the driver is on the dock.

What Chemicals operators run into

The problem

Hazard class and storage compatibility live in someone's head, not in the system

WMS

Segregation-Aware Putaway

Hazard class held on the item and enforced by the location, so incompatible substances can never be putaway in the same zone

Batch, concentration and expiry are re-keyed from the supplier's paperwork

WMS

Batch and Property Capture

Batch, concentration and expiry scanned at receipt and carried through every movement, with FEFO enforced on the pick

Safety data sheets are emailed separately from the goods and arrive out of date

Integration

SDS with Every Shipment

The current safety data sheet is linked to the batch and issued automatically with the delivery documents

ADR-relevant quantities are only discovered when the driver arrives

OMS

Dangerous Goods Order Checks

Limited-quantity and ADR thresholds evaluated at order entry, so the transport requirement is known before the load is built

A quality hold on one batch does not stop it being picked elsewhere

WMS

Quarantine and Release Control

Blocked, quarantined and released statuses enforced system-wide, so held stock is invisible to picking until QA releases it

Tank, drum and IBC stock are counted in different units and never reconcile

WMS

Multi-Unit Stock Handling

Litres, kilos and containers held against one stock record with conversions applied automatically at every transaction

our Chemicals Features

BizBloqs has implemented and optimized numerous features that are highly relevant to chemical distribution. We highlighted a few below.

Segregation Rules

Hazard class matched to location so incompatible goods can never share a zone

Batch and Concentration

Batch, strength and expiry captured at receipt and enforced through FEFO picking

SDS Distribution

The current safety data sheet linked to the batch and shipped with the goods

ADR Order Checks

Dangerous goods thresholds evaluated at order entry, before the load is planned

Quarantine and Release

Blocked and held stock made invisible to picking until QA releases it

Multi-Unit Stock

Litres, kilos, drums and IBCs on one record with automatic conversion

In addition to a scan procedure with EDI integration, BizBloqs has set up an entire production system for us. Production planning can provide direct instructions and as soon as they are ready, it all arrives in the OMS. This gives us a larger production capacity and a drastic reduction of the picking mistakes in dispatching.
